**Trigger warning
On a bright cool morning this past Saturday, I was honored to have joined with thousands of others at the Women’s Reproductive Rights March in Montclair, New Jersey.
With 42 million reported abortions currently performed each year in the US alone, the need is great. By banning abortion and eliminating a women’s choice, increased deaths, depression, and suicide have a great propensity to result.
There are few words to describe how inspiring it was to see so many different kinds of people, young, old, and all genders come together to support this important call to action during this monumental time.
First Texas, then what?
Before legislation is overturned and a women’s right to choose is eliminated, we must ask ourselves, “are we looking at this issue through the lens of a woman?” And “whose right is it to enforce one’s religion or beliefs on another in the land of the free and the brave?” “What more can help victims needing abortions put their perpetrators for their harmful act behind bars?”
As per the Center for Disease Control, 18 million women reported having experienced vaginal assault (rape, incest, non-consensual intercourse) in their lifetime, and 3 million of these women were reported having gotten pregnant. Each year, approximately 42 million women were reported to have had an abortion. That’s 42,000,000 women A YEAR who had to make this grueling decision. To add Insult to injury, 68,000 women a year die due to 25 million unsafe abortions, and of those, 5 million suffer from health problems for the rest of their lives.
What causes me to stop in my tracks are the 42 million women a year already in need of these services. What happens if other states follow Texas’ lead? Let’s stop and catch our breath and ask ourselves, how can we protect women more? How can we educate young men and women better on sexual health and social etiquette, and adjust our sails to steer the focus to finding solutions that support and enable the rights of a woman to live a safe life securely in this great country of ours. Not to take away a service that can give her a better life due to a bad decision, especially under the forceful hand and body of another.
